This was a book that I went into with absolutely no expectations; I wanted to take it as it came. I haven’t read any Jane Austen, but the mini-reviews on the dust jacket assured me that that should not pose to be an impediment in my reading of this book. In the end, I was left feeling disappointed.

The Jane Austen Book Club is the story of 6 very different kinds of people – Bernadette, Prudie, Sylvia, Grigg, Jocelyn and Allegra – who form a reading group specially dedicated to the reading of Jane Austen’s books. Every month, they read a Jane Austen and meet at one person’s house to discuss the book. The lives of these characters unfold during the months that the book club meets, and the reader gets to know a bit of their past life too.

Most of the characters just felt weird, or maybe it was just me. Some parts of the characters’ life stories made no sense to me; I was wondering why those parts have been included at all. I could see no bonding between the members of the group, no really stimulating conversations about reading or books. Even after reading three-quarters of the book, I couldn’t bring myself to like the characters, to feel for them.
