Bartle worked as a scouting executive, on the board of numerous corporations and banks, as director of the American War Dads during World War II, as President of Missouri Valley College from 1945 to 1952, and as Mayor from 1955 to 1963. He oversaw the desegregation of the city hospitals and built the Kansas City airport, and, when the Dallas Texans football team moved to Kansas City, they adopted Bartle's nickname "Chief" and became known as the Kansas City Chiefs. He died in 1974.
