William of Ypres
Count of Flanders, supporter of King Stephen of England (1104–1164)
William of Ypres (Dutch: Willem van Yper; c. 1090 – 24 January 1165[1]) was a Flemish nobleman and one of the first mercenary captains of the Middle Ages.[2] Following two unsuccessful bids for the County of Flanders, William became King Stephen of England's chief lieutenant during the civil war of 1139–54 known as the Anarchy. He held Kent, though not the title of earl, until the early years of King Henry II's reign, when he returned to Flanders.
Struggle for Flanders
[edit]William was an illegitimate son of Philip of Loo, who was the son of the Flemish count Robert the Frisian and younger brother of Robert II.[3] William's mother was a wool carder, which further diminished his status; King Louis VI of France pointed out that she never rose from that station.[4] The exact date of his birth is unknown, and although c. 1090 is the commonly used date of his birth, several other dates later in the same decade are also plausible.[3] His brother, Theobald Sorel, was likely born of another relationship of hers. His maternal origin did not prevent him from having a large influence in Flanders.[4]

Stephen (c.1097 - 1154)
Stephen ©Stephen usurped the English throne from Matilda in 1135, but failed to consolidate his power during the ensuing civil strife.
Stephen was born in around 1097 in Blois, France, the son of the Count of Blois and Adela, daughter of William the Conqueror. He was sent to England to be raised at the court of his uncle, Henry I. Although Stephen and other nobles pledged to support Henry's daughter, Matilda, as Henry's successor there was widespread unhappiness at the thought of a woman ruler. Consequently, after Henry I died in December 1135, the leading lords and bishops welcomed Stephen as the new king. He was not a natural leader, rapidly making concessions that exposed his weakness. He appointed large numbers of new earls, an expensive act that brought little reward and alienated his nobles with his desperate measures to build support and with the lawlessness of his Flemish mercenaries.
In 1138, Matilda's half brother, Robert, Earl of Gloucester, took up arms on her behalf. Early victories for Stephen faded when he lost the support of the church. Seizing her opportunity, Matilda invaded England in September 1139. With foolish chivalry, Stephen had Matilda escorted to Bristol, whereupon she proceeded to take control of western England.
